Steroids Before and After

My Diet Strategy

So prior to ever starting steroids, I have tried many different diets.  In college and my early 20’s I could just kind of eat whatever I wanted.  And I ate like a college kid, lots of pizza and fast food, very little vegetables.

I never got FAT-fat, like rolls or bulges, I only weighed 140-150 pounds.  But I was skinny-fat.  I didn’t have a gut, I was just smooth, not defined, and not super lean.

I was only about 25 when that standard american diet started making me F-A-T fat, I shot up to 170 and it was because of a gut, not because I was strong.

Shortly after that I discovered the Atkins diet, and low carb.  I tried that with great success.  And then I found Mark Sisson’s website, and the Paleo diet, and decided that’s the best, healthiest way to eat.  It’s what humans have eaten for millions of years, what our bodies are meant for, it’s real FOOD.

The only reason I’m not in better shape now, and leaner, is because I cheat all the damn time.  I’m only human.

And as great as it is to talk about the paleo diet being natural, and healthy, and what your body was meant to eat… it’s hard for even the tastiest of natural foods to compete with delicious, ENGINEERED FOR FLAVOR, junk food.  Del taco is effing delicious.  Pizza and Ice cream are delicious.

So I’d paleo it all week, but cheat too much on the weekends over the past year, that’s why I’m not as lean as I should be.

In a perfect world, I would just be eating a paleo diet all the time.  I have done it before for months at a time, and you can pretty effortlessly maintain your weight.

It’s harder to lose weight, but very, very easy to just not get fat.  Throw in some intermittent fasting, don’t cheat on weekends, and the fat will come right off.

On a paleo diet you get a good chunk of your calories from fat.  And that’s good, you need good healthy fats.  And since you aren’t eating tons of carbs you need something for an energy source.  And fat is much cheaper than protein.

One big reason you need fats is to produce Testosterone.  Your body makes T from saturated fat and zinc.  So if you go really low fat on your diet you can easily crash your T levels.  However, that’s not a concern at all if you are injecting Testosterone.

My Goals

If I had gotten leaner before starting this, my goal would just be to put on as much muscle as possible, without getting TOO fat.  But unfortunately I’m already too fat (probably 18% bf or so).  So my goal is to lose fat while gaining muscle.  Almost impossible naturally.  Entirely possible on steroids.  And I’ll tell you why…

Partioning

The amazing thing the steroids do is let you use more of the protein you eat to build muscle.  There’s a myth in bodybuilding circles that if you are natural, and just lift heavy and eat more and make sure to eat lots of protein, you’ll grow muscle like crazy.  And that if you aren’t growing, then you aren’t eating enough.

NOT TRUE.  If that were true, than women could do it and get just as muscular as guys.  But women can’t do that.  Because they lack the Testosterone to pack on muscle.

And I’ve proved it out myself.  I followed that foolish advice about 5 years ago.  I ate 5,000 calories a day, and 200+ grams of protein a day…. man I spent a fortune on protein shakes.  I got A LITTLE bit stronger – didn’t even hit personal bests in some things – and a LOT fatter.  I got up to 200 pounds and was probably 30% bodyfat.

The reason that didn’t work, is the same reason women can’t eat big, train big and grow big arms.  If your T levels aren’t high enough, it doesn’t matter how much protein you eat (or how hard you train), your body will just take the excess and turn it into glycogen to use for energy.

And if you eat enough, it will turn that glycogen into fat for stored energy later.  VERY expensive fat given the cost of a pound of beef -vs- a pound of rice or potatoes.

But on steroids, ALL of that changes!  The steroids allow you to use MORE of the protein you eat to build muscle.  If you took high enough doses, it would allow you to use ALL the protein you eat for muscle building.

I don’t know exactly what that magic number is, how many mg of a certain steroid you need, to be able to process X grams of protein and use it all for muscle.  But suffice to say at 500mg of Test E a week, I will be using far more of the protein I eat each day, if not all of it, for muscle growth, than I would naturally.

So the diet on steroids to gain muscle and lose fat, should be low fat, low carb (on non workout days) and HIGH protein.  It’s ONLY because of the steroids, that you can make use of that high protein and have a chance of gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time.

Naturally?  Unless you just won the genetic lottery and have crazy high T levels on your own, you can forget about it.  You’re just eating, very, very expensive glycogen.

What’s the diet?

So my diet on steroids, is paleo, but modified.  It will be a lean protein version of paleo.  Less fat than normal.  Basically just lean protein like chicken or tuna and veggies most of the time.  Maybe a little fruit for variety.  And a protein shake with every meal (just protein, very little carbs/fat).

Lean-Protein

What about Carbs?

I do need carbs to power my workouts.  I lift Mon, Wed, Friday.  So those days I have rice and protein instead of veggies and protein at lunch, so I have glycogen available to fuel the 6pm workout.  I’ll have white rice instead of brown.  You could also do white potatoes.

I do this because i’m running pretty low-carb most of the time, so I actually WANT high glycemic index carbs here so they digest quickly and are ready to go as muscle glycogen 5 hours later when it’s workout time.

You COULD get away with something sugary here.  But sugar is such an addictive poison, I avoid it at all costs, even here when I could pull it off.  It’s not worth getting re-hooked, or igniting cravings for sugar later.  Plus the ensuing insulin spike/crash makes you feel terrible.

Every day I skip breakfast, and Tuesday and Thursday I fast all day at work, and have a big dinner of lean veggies and protein, with a protein shake.  I also fast on Saturdays until I get back from Volleyball around 5pm.   Intermittent fasting is an easy way to keep calories down.

I know, I know it’s CRAZY to fast when you’re trying to build muscle!  Crazy!  Except that 4 weeks in now, I’ve been doing just that and I’m getting stronger and bigger every workout, while losing inches on my belly.  (Ok 1 ½ inches)

Sure, I could gain more if I ate high protein meals all day long, but I’m getting enough protein at dinner Tues/Thurs and on the other days to grow.

My main goal is fat loss WITH muscle gain.  If I get big and strong and fat, I’m screwed.  Because I’ll lose all the muscle when I’m off steroids trying to take the fat off.

I HAVE TO lean out on this cycle or it’s not worth doing.  Next cycle I can worry about doing just a bulk.  Even then it would be a clean-bulk, not an indiscriminate “bulk-up” where you get strong and fat.

So here’s what it all looks like

I sometimes go out to the bars at night man-whoring, and come back hungry.  Then I’ll have 2 cans of tuna with a big TEAspoon of mayo (about 50 cals) and another protein shake.  but only if I’m out late and hungry.

I’m losing fat and gaining muscle on this diet, with steroids.  Steroids are NOT magic.  They just tilt the partitioning WAY in your favor so you can do awesome things like this.  You can get FAT on steroids, you can get strong, you can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time.

You could even LOSE muscle on steroids and get fat if you only ate 20grams of protein a day and a ton of empty carbs and fat.  Diet is still huge.  Steroids make all of your hard work actually pay off.  But you still have to put in the work.  #1 diet.  #2 Lift.

If you can’t gain like this, then don’t do the fasting on Tues/Thurs/Sat and have a high protein breakfast and or lunch.  Or change the protein shakes to 50g.  DON’T indiscriminately add calories, and fat.

It helps if you can find something you like and just make and eat the same thing over and over again.  You can mix it up, but it takes a lot more prep, work.

I love my chicken stir fry and can eat it every night for dinner for 6 months if I have to.  I’m sticking myself with a freakin’ needle 4 times a week, I can certainly eat “boring” meals.  How bad do you want it?   🙂

Spices help a lot too.  I put a ton of hot sauce on my stir-fry, and season with salt and pepper as well.

You don’t have to do intermittent fasting, I just find it’s the easiest way to control calories.  And I feel pretty fantastic on it.  The whole eat 6 meals a day, or you’ll go into “starvation mode” and lose all your muscle thing, is complete BS.  Check out Martin’s Site, or Brad Pilon’s site for more info on IF’ing if that concept it new to you.

I normally eat a pretty high fat diet, Probably greater than 50% of my calories come from fat.  I have decent amount of ground beef, pork shoulder, nuts, way more butter, things like that.  But you don’t need it here.  Eat enough protein to grow, enough carbs before your workouts to power them, and just barely enough fat so food tastes good.

Veggies are filler.  They fill you up, without a ton of carbs or fat, and give you the MICRO-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) your body needs.  The gear makes you use the protein for muscle and you will MOTOR through bodyfat to make up the deficit.  Especially on those fast days.  🙂

I don’t do ANY cardio, except for Volleyball on saturdays, and SLOW biking to the beach.   And that’s for fun.  Trying to control your weight with cardio is total foolishness.  Control your weight with diet.  Too much cardio will melt MUSCLE quickly.  That’s not what I want.  PLUS… hard cardio demands ready muscle glycogen, and therefore lots of carbs.  I don’t want to eat carbs except when I need to before my LIFTING workouts.
